- Why Walker Orthodontics?
Airway Orthodontics from our industry-leading orthodontist is an interdisciplinary subfield of orthodontics that works to improve the overall health of both children and adults. Dr. Walker’s specialty focuses on the relationship between the body’s adequate oxygen intake and comprehensive orthodontic treatment for the facial structure, mouth, jaws, and teeth – also known as Airway Orthodontics
As one of the pioneers in the research and study of this specialty orthodontic field, Dr. Walker is also the Director of Airway Courses at Boston University School of Dentistry. His advanced expertise and training address the effects that breathing and oral habits of children have on the jaw, and conversely, the effect that a child’s facial shape has on breathing.
For adults, Airway Orthodontics means a life-changing solution for patients with sleep apnea – Dr. Walker both diagnoses new cases of sleep apnea and also helps people who currently rely on a CPAP machine for adequate oxygen intake while sleeping.
When the body struggled for proper oxygen levels, many long-term health problems can arise for both children and adults. Medical research studies show that potential issues include a raised risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. In younger children, the development of their facial shape can also be adversely affected by chronic mouth breathing.
In children and adolescents, symptoms of breathing disorders may include hyperactivity, chronic lethargy, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, bedwetting, shallow breathing, chronic nighttime restlessness, and periods of no breathing or breath holding while asleep. Adults may snore heavily, wake with choking sensation or gasping for breath, experience heartburn, or feel exhausted after a full night’s sleep.
Walker Orthodontics focuses on Airway Orthodontics to address the underlying cause of obstructed breathing, so children and adults can enjoy a lifetime of optimum breathing and improved overall health.
